BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A man has been arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly punched his wife during an argument and dumped her body in a stream.

A missing person report was filed Friday and Boone County investigators have begun a search for Elizabeth “Nikki” Wilhoite, 41, of Lebanon. They asked the public for help on social media, and after discovering that the defendant’s mother is a county councilor, Indiana State Police took the lead in the investigation to avoid a conflict of interest with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.

The investigation revealed that Andrew N. Wilhoite, 39, of Lebanon, had had some sort of domestic dispute with his wife, Elizabeth Wilhoite. He allegedly hit her on the head with a blunt object which knocked her unconscious. He attempted to cover up the situation by driving her body into a nearby stream and dumping her in the water.

Elizabeth Wilhoite’s body was found around 3 a.m. Saturday, partially submerged in about 3 feet of water, police said. Andrew Wilhoite was later arrested and taken to Boone County Jail for murder just before 4am on Saturday.

Elizabeth Wilhoite was pronounced dead by the Boone County coroner. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and circumstances of his death.

The investigation is ongoing.
