Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Advisor in the Department of Science and Technology (DST), assumed the additional post of Secretary of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) on October 8, 2022 after Dr. Sandeep Verma stepped down as secretary of the SERB after completing his term on October 7.
Dr. Gupta currently leads the Policy Coordination and Program Management Division (PCPM) and is the overall responsible for 5 National Missions at DST—National Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical System Mission, National Technology Mission and Quantum Applications, Super-national Mission for Computing, National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change and National Mission for Sustaining Himalayan Ecosystem.
A distinguished atmospheric scientist, Dr. Gupta has over 200 research articles in national and international journals and reviews to his credit. He is the editor of 5 books, author of more than 350 articles and nearly 1000 reports.
He is a member of Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE), Indian Meteorological Society (FIMS) and Association of Agro-Meteorologists (FAAM).
Some of the main research areas that Dr. Gupta is interested in include tropical cyclone forecasting, monsoon meteorology, location-specific weather forecasting, weather and climate modelling, STI policy areas such as open science, equity and inclusion, STI financing, interconnection of systems, etc. Dr Gupta was one of the authors of India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and head of the secretariat that drafted India’s new science, technology and innovation policy, which is underway of finalization.
With a postgraduate degree from Lucknow University in Physics (1984) and a PhD from IIT Delhi in Atmospheric Science (1999), he joined the Indian Meteorological Department in 1985, then the National Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting in 1994, both currently under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
