As of August 2021, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has been investigating arson attacks in the area and officers have identified 44 separate arson attacks believed to be related.

“These arson attacks have caused a great deal of concern and traumatized many members of the community,” Acting Staff Sgt. David Graham said in a statement Thursday.

“The investigation proved to be very complex and lengthy, involving several persons of interest linked to each other through properties in the Alberta Avenue area. We appreciate the patience of the community as we took the time necessary to build a solid investigation leading to the arrest of the prime suspect in this big case.

On Wednesday, Darcy Willier, 38, was arrested and charged with seven counts of arson, two counts of arson in disregard of human life, as well as several firearms charges.

The investigation is ongoing and further changes may be made, police said.

Staff Sgt. Graham is scheduled to speak to the media about the arson Thursday morning.
