Fulham eased some of the growing discontent by signing Joao Palhinha, and the finer details of the midfielder’s move have come to light.
Recent reports have shed light on Fulham’s laborious transfer window so far. Administrator Marco Silva reportedly wants up to 10 new signingsbut before today, their count was zero.
Luckily for Cottagers fans, the club is out of the picture and their first arrival is impressive.
Fulham have officially confirmed the capture of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha.
The defensive-minded star, 26, has 14 Portuguese caps to his name and had become Wolves’ main target.
Bruno Lage’s team viewed Palhinha as the ideal successor to exit-bound Ruben Neves.
However, interest in Neves did not materialize and a direct phone call between Silva and Palhinha would have swung the pendulum in favor of Fulham.
The move has now crossed the line with Palhinha signing a five-year contract until 2027. Fulham also have the option of extending his stay for a further 12 months.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano details the costsreporting that Fulham’s deal could total £19million if all add-ons are met.
This would make him the club’s fourth most expensive signing behind Jean Michael Seri, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Aleksandar Mitrović.
Joao Palhinha and Tony Khan speak out
“I’m very happy to be here,” Palhinha told Fulham’s in-house TV channel. “It’s a great opportunity for me, for my career, to play in what is – in my opinion – the best league in the world.
“I signed with a big club. Club wanted me, and I chose Club, so I promise the fans that I will do my best, and I hope we can win so much this season.
Co-owner Tony Khan added: “João Palhinha has excelled in Portugal playing both club and international football. He was one of our main targets in this window.
“While there were other top clubs aiming for his signature, we are delighted that João has chosen to come here and wants to play for Fulham under our great manager Marco Silva, and we believe João will be a valuable addition to strengthen the squad to compete in the Premier League this season.
