President Muhammadu Buhari has been tasked with appointing a youth as the running mate of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
They noted that given Tinubu’s age, who is in his 60s, and the failure of a youngster to become the party’s standard bearer for the 2023 general election, it is incumbent on the president to stand up. ensure that a young person becomes his running mate.
The groups made the remark in a statement released Friday in Abuja.
The groups that make up the coalition include the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), the National Association of University Students (NAUS),
National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) and National Association of College of Education Students (NANCES).
Others include: All Progressive Farmers Association (APFA), with 8.6 million registered members, Coalition Of Niger Delta Ex Militant Generals, Yoruba General Assembly, with 16 million members and Ebira Reachout Foundation.
The list also includes: El-Dabi support groups in all 774 LGAs nationwide with a strong local presence, and the Ibrahim presidential campaign organization, with state coordinators in all 36 states, including FCT.
Specifically, they urge the President to consider a
Dr Ibrahim Bello Dauda who they say has been a mentor to Nigerian students, with many scholarships and a friend to Nigerian farmers,
for the position of vice president in the upcoming political dispensation.
“We write on behalf of a coalition of young leaders representing 21 youth groups in Nigeria, to congratulate you on the success of the APC Special National Convention and Presidential Primary Election.
“We also salute the leadership and paternal role you have played in making democracy triumph.
“However, we would like to declare that young people have an interest in the candidacy for the vice-presidency.
“Your Excellency has always expressed your desire for the younger generation to assume leadership.
“We believe the time should be right to take clear action on this, in the spirit of the ‘Youth O’clock’ campaign and your promises to the younger generation.
“We ask you to use your position to ensure that the APC chooses a young vice-presidential candidate / vice-presidential candidate for the presidential standard bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu”, said the president of the NYCN and coalition organizer, Igwe Ude-Umanta.
Ude-Umanta, who said so in letters to Buhari, Tinubu and APC National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu on Friday, however, said the youngster must have the ability, experience and acceptability to the within the youth constituency and across Nigeria.
“May we therefore humbly request and present Dr. Ibrahim Bello Dauda (El-Dabi) for your consideration and choice.
“Dr. Dauda is an accomplished leader, a mentor of young people, a mobilizer of human and material resources, and above all, he is a highly educated young man, deeply experienced, eager and ready to lead.
“Your Excellency, we cannot ignore the politics surrounding our appeal, due to other interests, considerations and calculations.
“But we are confident that this is not just a sure path to victory, but also eventual stability and progress in governance,” Ude-Umanta said.
He assured the president of the continued support and loyalty of the youth.
The NYCN, in a similar letter to Tinubu, congratulated the APC presidential candidate on his victory in the just-concluded primary elections.
“It was a clear demonstration of political savvy, national popularity and general acceptance of you and your candidacy.
“You can be assured of our support and solidarity throughout the campaigns until victory,” said the NYCN president.
He noted, however, that while Nigeria desperately needed a leader “of demonstrable ability and acumen”, young people were also making a legitimate demand.
“In line with the promises made by older leaders and mentors like you, this request is that, in the spirit of the ‘Youth O’clock’ campaign, you consider a young running mate who has the ability, experience and who is acceptable within the youth constituency and across Nigeria just like you.
“May we therefore humbly ask you to consider and choose Dr. Ibrahim Bello Dauda (El-Dabi) as your running mate,” the youths said in the letter to Tinubu.
In the same vein, the coalition, which also congratulated Adamu on the success of the presidential primary, made the same request for a young person as Tinubu’s vice-presidential running mate.
“Promises have been made and desires expressed on the need to entrust the different mantle of leadership to the younger generation as the older ones leave the stage after national services,” Ude-Umanta said.
The coalition, while assuring the APC of its continued support, loyalty, love and highest esteem, said it expected favorable responses to the letters.
