HBO Max updated its Apple TV app to address the myriad of issues that plagued the software since last week. The update addresses significant issues with basic features such as fast forward and rewind that were introduced after the software deviated from using the tvOS native video player. The software update brings the native player back.

Although the worst issues seem to have been fixed, users of the HBOMax subreddit report that after the new update, some bugs remain. One user reports that his subtitles keep falling back to Spanish, for example. Fortunately, as another user mentioned, the new update makes it easier to switch back subtitles, a process that was made significantly more difficult with the previous update.
Questions remain as to how such defective software could be released to users in the first place.
