Helms Career Education offers a variety of training programs

AUGUSTA, Georgia (WRDW / WAGT) – From engineering to computer literacy, you can learn everything at Helms Career Education. It’s a division of goodwill and just got a $ 10,000 grant from Bank of America. The money will help them offer little or in most cases free training programs to their students.

Administrative and office skills, including certified flooring, are just a few of the training programs you can complete. We have been told that the enrollment looks good so far.

Janice Chavez has been unemployed for a few years and has decided that it is time to get back to work. Chavez was hired at Goodwill right after completing some of the courses.

“It was really a great feeling. I knew I was able to do so many different things, but having the opportunity to show someone what you can do really matters the older you get. People don’t want to hire you often when you’re older, ”she said.

She works as an employment resource specialist and says she enjoys it.

“I like the fact that I can help other people, and I want to keep doing it, so it really was a great experience to be here,” said Leah Pontani, Senior VP of Career Development.

Pontani says the registration numbers are almost on the right track compared to their pre-COVID numbers. She says that 70 percent of people who enroll in these programs are 45 years of age or younger.

“We’re seeing starting wages now rise from $ 10 an hour to about $ 13.30 an hour, so the people entering work now are definitely considering some of these higher-paying positions,” she said .

Pontani says they serve 31 counties in Georgia and four in South Carolina, so choosing the programs on offer is a careful process.

“It’s really important for us to keep our finger on the pulse of what’s going on in each of these churches. As new businesses come and go, we can understand the training programs that will result in direct employment for these people, ”she said.

Chavez says to anyone who wants to enroll, do it.

“Not only does it give you that refresher, but it also gives you the confidence, the feeling that you can learn anything at any age, so it’s very rewarding,” she said.

You are currently enrolling for Certified Medical Administrative Assistants and Certified Floor Laying in Augusta. Registration closes on September 6th. There are also some virtual options. For more information and registration, visit the Helms Career Education website.
